Formerly, when a government official retired or was retired, he entered into the valley of oblivion, but nowadays he becomes a department editor. The Father of the Pure Food Law is now a private citizen, but thru his connection with the Good Housekeeping Magazine, Harvey W. Wiley speaks to a larger audience than when he was Uncle Sam's chemist.

We all know that Dr Wiley is one of those first-class fighting-men who would rather go against the wind than with it, but in the May issue of the Good Housekeeping Magazine, he admits he cannot refrain from joining in the growing protests against the use of alcoholic heverages. Dr Wiley does not believe in moderate drinking—he explains why he is firm for total abstinence.

After listening to some of the facts he presents, we feel it is fitting for him to repeat again the wisdom of Solomon: 'Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his color in the cup, when it moveth itself aright; at the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.'

Dr Wiley's article is illustrated with charts which show graphically that the greatest wrecker of homes is that ancient enemy of mankind—alcohol. Thru the courtesy of the admirable publication in which they appeared, we are enabled to reproduce these charts.
